I just had a poke around the VoiceThread website - wow! It's definitely more dynamic than Slidecast, what with the multiple sound files. I really like this, and may do a writeup on it in the future. WRT music, I wonder if you could use a program like Audacity to record voice over background music, like a multi-track mp3, and then post it? In terms of classroom application, just off the top of my head I see potential for activities involving inner monologue here.
