Hi Melinda,

Thanks for commenting! I actually used this blog post of yours as an example during a workshop I ran on flipped faculty meetings. :-)

We actually started implementing this model midway through this school year; you can read my reflections on how it's gone so far here: http://www.apaceofchange.com/2013/02/01/how-we-flipped-our-faculty-meeting/ and here: http://www.apaceofchange.com/2013/03/12/further-flipping/

For what it's worth, I think email reading/video watching, etc., falls under "other relevant duties" as far as contract language goes. I am a proponent of unions, and am active in my local, but I think anyone would have a very difficult time pursuing a grievance against a practice designed to respect teachers' time and help facilitate their workflow. I recall discussing this very issue with a higher-up in a state teachers' union, and this person told me that any local would have to be "insane" to fight something like this (at least as I described it), precisely because it's designed to improve their working situations.

Looking forward to reading more about how it goes in your building!

Below is a link to my beginning of the year "flipped faculty meeting." You can see my example of how I recorded participation with the form at the end.
As far as union contracts, do you count the time it takes to read an email as part of contract time? Can they read or watch tutorials during thief planning period? My experience is the flipped version is shorter. I an not experienced in contract like that either.
I will balance flipping with face to face but both I think using both is good for me.

Hi Damian - I'm glad Kiera likes it...and amazed at how something I was hoping that 'someone' could use - ended up going international.

Great post, Damian! I'm so glad that you named your daughter Kiera, and that my friend mis-spelled her son's friend's name, so that this all came to pass! Illich is relevant here - this way of connecting to one another directly, without being mediated by the aims of an institution is refreshing (the ramifications of our connections being mediated by the internet is a subject for another day). I just think it's wonderful that you sent your home address to a complete stranger in another country - that hat is a symbol of many good things!

How funny! Yhe first thing I thought of was when I saw Kiera's pic was I remember when you announced on twitter she was born! Then I read the story and loved how twitter played into it.
I get comments from my HS students incredulous that I am on twitter. I always think to myself-you were in elementary school having recess when the early adopters were typing our first 140 character tweets. Great post Damien!

Hi Erica,

Whatever presence I have on Twitter is a direct result of engaging in conversations. My best advice is to follow interesting people, then see who they follow, and follow those people as well. When people you follow re-tweet others, click through and see if those people are worth following. That's how I started to build my network, and then engaging those people directly in conversation, as well as sharing resources I found interesting. It's a slow process, but an important one.

I can't say exactly how long it took me because I don't know that it's something that's ever "done" - it's always a work in progress, always in a state of flux. It's not about how many followers you have, but rather the quality of the people in your network. I'd rather have a small network of 100 people who post useful stuff and push my thinking than 10,000 followers who don't.

Good luck with your own networking adventure - feel free to look me up on Twitter!

Thank you for this. How long did it take you to establish a presence on Twitter? I still have a hard time navigating it. And since I'm not truly 'friends' with my followers, I don't seem to gain any networking or conversation through it. What were some of your tricks? Thanks!

Thanks, Doug. Having a quick look at your Project Reclaim posts now, and am particularly intrigued by openphoto.me. Will definitely be looking into that further as a possible Flickr replacement. I'm really only using it as a way to share my 365 Project photos this year, so I'm not terribly invested in the service if there's a free alternative out there.

How have you liked openphoto since your initial blog post?
